1. Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day
For optimal oral health, brush your teeth both in the morning and before bed. Brushing your teeth before bed is essential for removing the germs that accumulate throughout the day. Don’t skip this step to keep your smile healthy and fresh!
2. Brushing and Flossing
Floss at least once a day when brushing your teeth to remove plaque, prevent gum disease and your overall health. Learn how to floss correctly or contact our dentist for advice.
3. Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly
Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed or worn, to ensure effective cleaning.
4. Eat Healthy Food
Pay attention to your diet – a diet high in processed sugars can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease. Opt for calcium-rich foods to keep your smile strong and healthy. Calcium-containing food and drinks include dairy products, oily fish like salmon and sardines, leafy green vegetables, and almonds.
5. Stay Hydrated with Water
Staying hydrated by drinking at least two litres of water daily helps maintain good oral health. Water helps rinse away debris from acidic or sugary foods, preventing them from lingering on your teeth.
Staying properly hydrated keeps your mouth moist and reduces dry mouth. It also helps maintain good saliva levels. This is important for a healthy and strong smile.
6. Avoid Smoking and Vaping
Stay away from tobacco products and harsh chemicals in vapes. They can damage your teeth and gums. They also raise the risk of throat and oral cancers. Take care of your health and steer clear of these harmful habits.
7. Choose Your Toothpaste Wisely
Be cautious with whitening toothpastes – they can be abrasive and may contribute to tooth wear over time. Instead, opt for a fluoride toothpaste to keep your teeth strong, healthy, and protected against decay.
8. Limit sugary and acidic food and drinks
Sugary, acidic, and processed foods can harm tooth enamel. This is the protective outer layer of your teeth. When damage occurs to enamel, it can lead to erosion and wear. This weakens your teeth and increases the risk of tooth decay and other oral health problems.
You don’t need to cut out these foods and drinks completely. However, limiting them and choosing healthier options can help your oral health.
9. Choose the right type of toothbrush
Practice good oral hygiene by using a soft-bristled toothbrush to protect your teeth and gums from damage. Electric toothbrushes can be helpful for some people. However, manual toothbrushes work well too. Just use the right technique and brush for the recommended time.
10. Regularly Visit Your Dentist
Even with great oral hygiene habits, visiting your dentist every six months is essential. Regular dental check-ups help your dentist check your oral health. They can find problems early and give treatment if needed.
